25 Lessons Learned After 25 Years in Business

Our team at Seacoast Construction is excited to mark 25 years serving project owners and clients throughout South Florida. As they say, with age comes wisdom, and while we admit there’s always more to learn, we certainly have banked a wealth of knowledge during our time as general contractors, owner’s representatives, construction consultants and many other roles in between here in the greater Miami area.

Here is a brief rundown of 25 nuggets of wisdom we carry with us after 25 years in the business.

  1. Relationships matter.
  2. Build the right team, and a successful build will follow.
  3. There’s no shortcut for quality work.
  4. Put yourself in your clients’ shoes and work toward the goal together.
  5. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Ask for clarification when needed.
  6. Keep thorough documentation.
  7. Measure twice, cut once.
  8. Prioritize permitting.
  9. Never skimp on pre-construction.
  10. The lowest bid is usually not the best bid.
  11. Read the fine print.
  12. If you come out of the ground right, the project will come out successful.
  13. Hire local.
  14. Construction in South Florida is not like construction in other parts of the country (which is also why you should hire local).
  15. Trends come and go, but quality construction stands the test of time.
  16. Yes, you can avoid surprises on a construction project.
  17. Feasibility studies can save you time, money and major headaches.
  18. Hurricane season needs to be accounted for. Be prepared.
  19. Ask for help when you need it.
  20. It’s never too late to change contractors on a job.
  21. No permit? Big problems.
  22. Good communication can solve 99% of your problems.
  23. Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion.
  24. Surround yourself with hardworking professionals.
  25. Always push the client to include Construction Administration from design team on all projects.
