Florida Building Code Requirements

Despite occupying the medical world, MedSpas are not required to adhere to Florida’s AHCA-based code (Yes, you can read that again). The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) is responsible for administering the Florida Medicaid program, licensing and regulating Florida’s health facilities, and providing information to Floridians about the quality of care they receive.

That said, MedSpas are still required to meet all Florida building code requirements for commercial properties (and then some).

In terms of building classification, MedSpas have a few additional requirements that traditional commercial buildings do not. The differences typically come down to how the project is divided based on occupancy and groups. Like all commercial buildings, NEC, NFPA and Life Safety requirements apply, yet these requirements differ subtly in a way that makes MedSpas a bit more stringent than regular commercial spaces. For example, MedSpas must include medical grade outlets in their facilities in order to comply with NEC code.
